Miami downtown is a small cluster of buildings at the geographical centre of the city. In relation to downtown, the airport is northwest, the beaches are east, Coconut Grove is south, Coral Gables is west and the rest of the city is north. The mainland area of Miami is divided into four sections (NE, NW, SE and SW) by the intersection of Flagler street and Miami avenue. Avenues generally run north-south, while streets go east-west. South Beach is popular for people-watching and nightlife; while Miami Beach is littered with massive beach hotels, great sand and good surf.
