USA health and safety

The USA is one of the safest and most popular travel destinations in the world. It has a stable government, good medical facilities and infrastructure, and low levels of street crime outside of major cities. However, in major cities such as New York City, Miami, Los Angeles and Washington, DC, visitors should take extra precautions to avoid becoming victims of crime.

Hospitals and clinics in the USA are clean, organised and professional, but expensive. You should take out travel insurance before you visit. Don’t worry about not receiving emergency treatment if you need it and can’t provide proof of insurance, but expect a large bill.

Safety for travellers in the USA is generally good, although the larger cities can be dangerous in parts and at night. Road safety is generally good as well, but you should always take precautions and drive carefully. Sleeping in train stations or bus stations is generally not accepted in the USA. While driving, you can usually find motel rooms along major interstate highways without a reservation. Do not sleep in your car at highway ‘rest areas’.
