Chicago is 176m above sea level and is at 41° north latitude. The city proper extends over 590km2. It is split into three zones by the Y-shaped Chicago River: North Side, South Side, and West Side. The heart of the city and downtown financial district is called The Loop. North and south of here, Chicago stretches along 46kms of Lake Michigan shoreline that is mostly free of commercial development. The city is about two-thirds the size of New York City and has about three million inhabitants, with another five million in the suburbs. Chicoago is easy to navigate, as it is laid out in a grid system.
