South Africa health and safety

South Africa’s healthcare is generally of a high standard, but government-funded hospitals are significantly less impressive than private clinics. The latter are expensive, so taking out healthcare insurance is a good idea. Crime is abominably high in South Africa, so personal safety cannot be assured while travelling in the country.

The major health risks for travellers to South Africa include bilharzia, a parasitic worm that is sometimes found in freshwater supplies in the eastern region of the country. Malaria is found in the northeastern parts of South Africa, and travellers should visit a doctor if they experience flu-like symptoms while in a malaria area, as the disease can be life-threatening.

South Africa’s crime rate is relative to the intense degree of poverty experienced by many of its inhabitants, and travellers should be on the alert and pay close attention to personal belongings. Car-jackings, muggings, theft and rape are common, and walking alone at night, or leaving belongings unattended in a public place is asking for trouble.
