Cape Town, located on a small peninsula at the base of the African continent, is one of the world’s most scenically gorgeous cities, and is home to an interesting mix of ethnic groups, cultures and languages. The rate of crime is high in Cape Town, and it is essential that visitors take the correct precautions to avoid becoming a statistic. Here are some basic tips for travellers.

In the interests of safety, don’t walk alone or catch trains/minibus taxis at night, wear flashy jewellery or be an obvious tourist.
Don’t spend so much time worrying about crime that you don’t enjoy the county or interact with the locals.
The sun is extremely harsh in the Western Cape, so wear a high protection factor sunscreen if you plan on spending much time outdoors.
During the summer months of December to February, the peak tourist time coincides with South African holidays, and the beaches and tourist areas are terribly crowded over this time.
When swimming, be aware that Cape Town is known for its strong currents and high density of Great White sharks.
When visiting Cape Point Nature Reserve, watch out for large baboons. They tend to associate tourists with food, and have been known to snatch bags and other items in pursuit of a snack.
Experience the Cape’s many musical performances. Cape Town has a buzzing social scene and plenty of talent, both young and old. Live music is played at a range of venues scattered all over the peninsula.
Rent a car. Cape Town’s public transport system is far from adequate, and many of the best sights and attractions are located far out of the city centre, so hiring a vehicle is the best way of getting around.
