Seville is one of Spain’s major cities and the capital of Andalusia. Despite its status as the fourth-largest city in Spain, Seville is surrounded by easily accessible countryside that can be seen from the heart of the urban area. Seville has plenty of historical and cultural attractions to amuse the visitor, and is also known for its spectacular festivals. Here are some basic tips to be aware of while travelling in the city.

The best time to visit Seville is in the months of October to April. Avoid July and August at all costs, when the city is unbearably hot and crowded.
Seville’s most important festivals are held in the March/April period, beginning with the Holy Week (Semana Santa), when there are hundreds of parades accompanied by music and singing. This is followed by the April Fair (La Feria de April), when the city becomes a frenzy of dancing and vibrant celebrations.
There are lovely walks around the Jewish area of Santa Cruz, where visitors can peruse the maze of alleys filled with tapas bars, secret gardens and strikingly beautiful architecture.
If you tire of walking, another good way to see the sights is in one of the city’s horse cabs. However, negotiate a price beforehand to avoid being overcharged.
Bullfighting takes place on most Sunday evenings between April and October. The largest bullring in Seville can be found in El Arenal, and is a magnificent Moorish tower dating from the 13th century, when it was built to protect the city port.
Flamenco dancing is an important part of Andalusian culture, and a lot of fun to boot, so be sure to set an evening or two aside for a performance.
Markets are scattered across the city and provide a fun and atmospheric way to shop for fresh produce or souvenirs. Good markets to visit are the Mercadillo de los Jueves, the Mercadillo de la Alameda, and the Mercadillo del Duque la Magdalena, among others.
