Portugal maps

Portugal is located in southwestern Europe, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and west of Spain. It boasts a population of 10.4 million and a land area of 92,391km2. To its west and southwest lie the islands of the Azores and Madeira, far out in the Atlantic. It measures just 560kms north to south and 220kms from east to west. The northern and central regions are heavily populated and characterised by rivers, valleys, forests and mountains. The highest range is the Serra da Estrela, peaking at Torre (1,993m). The south is less populated and, apart from the rocky backdrop of the Algarve, much flatter and drier.

Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, lies on the southwestern coastline, nestled against seven hills on the northern side of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River). As the country is so small, travelling to different locations never takes very long, especially as Portugal boasts an exceptional bus network that links every major town.
