Lisbon boasts a population of over half a million people spread over an area of 87 square kilometres. It is nestled against seven hills on the northern side of the Rio Tejo (Tagus River). Many of the city's attractions are within walking distance of each other in the central city area. Downtown, or Baixa, is a product of the grid-pattern planning imposed after the 1755 earthquake that flattened the city.
At the waterfront end of Baixa is Praça do Comércio, a square framed by arcades and dominated by a triumphal arch; at the northern end is focal Rossio (officially Praça Dom Pedro IV), with its calçada à Portugesa cobblestones in a black-and-white wave pattern. The Elevador de Santa Justa, an outdoor cast-iron lift opened in 1901, offers a view of the pedestrianised streets in between. The climate is mild and pleasant all year round. Travelling distances are never very far, as the country is so small and has an excellent and efficient bus network.
