New Zealand maps

New Zealand is a fertile and mountainous group of islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean, measuring over 270,500km2. It is made up of two main islands (the North Island and South Island), Stewart Island and a number of smaller islands. Seventy-five per cent of the country is more than 200 metres above sea level and the climate is temperate and changeable. Its nearest neighbour is Australia, 1,600kms to the west.

The capital is Wellington, located at the southern end of the North Island. Wellington is 655kms south of Auckland and has a compact city centre that is surrounded by an amphitheatre of steep volcanic hills overlooking a spectacular harbour. Ferries run regularly between Wellington and Picton (South Island); a two-hour journey.
