New Zealand health and safety

New Zealand is one of the safest places to visit in the world, with low crime rates, good road infrastructure, and easy-going people. Petty crime is on the rise, however, usually involving car theft, and visits to remote areas, especially out of season, should be planned thoroughly.

Quality medical care is widely available, but waiting lists exist for certain types of treatment. Serious medical problems requiring hospitalisation and/or medical evacuation to the United States and Europe are extremely expensive; therefore medical insurance is strongly recommended when visiting New Zealand.

Safety in New Zealand for travellers is good and violent crime is minimal. New Zealand is prone to seismic disturbances, so you should heed any warnings of possible volcanic activity, especially near Tongariro.
