Mexico health and safety
Travelling in Mexico can be risky, as a culture of ‘anything goes’ is often prevalent. This adds to the sense of adventure, and with the right precautions you should experience no problems. Medical services are excellent in Mexico City but less so in rural areas. Violent crime and robbery is a problem in the capital and on bus routes.
Adequate medical care can be found in all major cities. Excellent health facilities are available in Mexico City. Standards of medical training, patient care and business practices vary greatly among medical facilities in beach resorts throughout Mexico. Malaria precautions are recommended for many rural areas.
Street crime is on the increase. You should dress down and avoid wearing expensive jewellery or watches. You should be particularly alert on public transport, at airports, bus stations and tourist sites. Theft on buses is also common. All bus travel should be during daylight hours and on first-class buses if possible. Long distance bus travellers have had their personal belongings rifled while asleep. Women travelling on their own should be particularly alert.
