Japan is separated from the eastern coast of the Asian continent by the Sea of Japan, and is an archipelago of several thousands of islands, of which Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku are the four largest. Japan's closest neighbours are Korea, Russia and China. The landscape is mostly mountainous, and the total land area of the country is similar in size to the US state of California, about 375,000km2.
Tokyo, the Japanese capital, is situated on Japan’s southern coast, and can be easily accessed from other parts of the country by means of air, rail or road links. Narita International Airport is situated about an hour out of town, but depending on where you are headed, it may be more practical to fly to one of Japan’s other international airports.
