Italy maps

Italy boasts a population of 58 million spread over an area of 300,000km2. Its instantly recognisable boot shape juts into the Adriatic, Ionian, Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas – all of which form part of the Mediterranean Sea. It has land frontiers with France in the northwest, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the northeast.

There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterised predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 960kms from east to west, while the Apennines form the backbone of the peninsula, stretching in a wide arc concave to the Tyrrhenian Sea. A large part of central Italy is characterised by a green, hilly landscape.

The capital, Rome, sits roughly in the centre of the country on the southwestern coastline. It is approximately two hours by road or rail from here to Florence or Naples and six hours to Milan. Palermo is a 10-hour drive or a 14-hour train journey.
