Jerusalem was declared the capital of Israel half a century ago but is still not recognised internationally, with most countries having their consulates located in Tel Aviv. It has a population of 670,000 and is located roughly in the north-south centre of the country, straddling the West Bank. Its central location makes it a convenient base to explore the rest of the country, while its relatively small area means that walking is a popular way to explore the city, bar a few locations on the outskirts of the city.
