The island of Ireland is the westernmost and second largest of the British Isles, and is located in Western Europe, west of Great Britain, in the North Atlantic Ocean. The country’s landscape is dominated by a level or rolling interior encircled by craggy hills and small mountains, with sea cliffs on the west coast. It is separated from Great Britain by Saint George's Channel on the southeast, the Irish Sea on the east, and the North Channel on the northeast. Politically, the island is divided into Northern Ireland, a constituent part of Great Britain, and the Republic of Ireland, formerly Eire. The total land area is approximately 70,000km2, and the geographic coordinates are 53 00 N, 8 00 W.
The capital of the Republic of Ireland, Dublin, is located roughly halfway along the country’s east coast, facing the Irish Sea. The city is connected to other parts of Ireland by means of train, bus, air and ferry transportation. Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland, is in the northeast, at the end of a loch that empties into the North Channel.
