Ireland travel information

Although political conflict has plagued the country for decades, the Irish are nevertheless a warm, welcoming and humorous bunch - characteristics that, combined with Ireland’s superb natural and historical attractions, make travelling the country an unforgettable experience. The transportation network is efficient and widespread, medical services are of an exceptionally high standard, and tourists in Ireland face few major health risks.

Ireland is generally perceived as a fairly safe country, but incidents of pickpocketing and muggings are not uncommon. Cities are more dangerous than rural areas, and certain parts of cities are more dangerous than others. Visitors should avoid walking alone at night, wearing revealing clothing or expensive jewellery. Though terrorist attacks within the country are still a rare but frightening occurrence, they have diminished significantly since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, and are hardly ever directed at travellers. Check the Foreign & Commonwealth Office website for up-to-date information.
