Travelling in Greece is fairly easy and the people are laid-back and helpful. Risk of violence is low but theft by pickpockets and car crime is on the rise. Here are some basic tips and situations you should be aware of.
Greece is no longer dirt cheap. Reckon on spending around €80 to €100 per day to be comfortable. In restaurants, the service charge is included in the bill but it is the custom to leave a small amount; rounding up the bill is usually sufficient. Likewise for taxis - a small gratuity is appreciated.
Visitors to Greece will find the Greeks to be well aware of a strong historical and cultural heritage. Indecent behaviour, including mooning, is not tolerated and the police have made it clear that they will not hesitate to arrest. The courts are imposing heavy fines or prison sentences on people behaving indecently.
You should not become involved with drugs of any kind. Possession of even small quantities can lead to long terms of imprisonment.
A passport or document with a photograph on it should be carried at all times.
Do not take photographs or make notes near military or official installations. Seek permission before photographing individuals.
Although English is spoken by most who work with tourists, communication problems still occur, resulting in misinformation; therefore, you should double check dates, times and names when buying travel or tour tickets.
To prevent travellers’ diarrhoea, avoid the tap water, including raw fruits and vegetables washed in tap water. Your stomach may still become upset due to the change in diet, so carry diarrhoea tablets.
