Greece is located in southeastern Europe, occupying the southernmost part of the Balkan Peninsula and numerous islands. It is bordered by Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria, and Turkey. The Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean Sea and the Ionian Sea surround Greece. The total area is about 132,000kms2, one-fifth of which is composed of islands in the Aegean and Ionian seas. The land is mountainous and rugged and the topography diverse.
The capital, Athens, is the largest city and is situated in the southeast. There is a good road infrastructure but train travel is unreliable and infrequent. Travelling from Athens to Salonica takes about six hours by car, and a comprehensive network of ferries links Greece's many islands with each other and with the mainland.
