Barbados lies just east of the Caribbean island chain some 2,560kms southeast of Miami, Florida, in the USA. Relatively flat compared to its volcanic neighbours, it is one of the few coral-capped islands in the region. It has a population of 264,000 people and a land area of 430km2. The highest point is 335m Mount Hillaby, located near the centre of the island and just west of the breathtaking Scotland district. This dramatically rugged area comprises about one-sixth of the island and features jutting rocky spikes and ridges.
The west coast (the Caribbean side of the island) from Bridgetown up to St Peter is lined with lovely white-sand beaches and lapping waters. The far north and entire east coast (the Atlantic Ocean side) is rugged and pristine with hearty waves lashing the seascape.
The capital, Bridgetown, is a busy commercial city set on Carlisle Bay and boasts a deepwater port where thousands of cruising visitors disembark each year. Given the small size of the island, travel is not much of a problem, with buses being the most convenient and extensive form of public transportation.
