Barbados health and safety

Barbados is one of the most developed islands in the Caribbean and enjoys a relatively high standard of living. The majority of its income is derived from tourism so you can expect first-rate service, friendly people, lots of smiles, and a slick tourism infrastructure.

Medical care is generally good, but medical transport can take hours to respond and ambulance attendants are prohibited from applying lifesaving techniques during transport. Minor problems requiring a visit to the emergency room can involve a wait of several hours, however, private clinics and physicians can offer speedier service.

Barbados is generally safe and crime is low. However, as in most countries, petty crime and pickpocketing can be a problem in crowded tourist areas. Do not leave valuables of any kind on the beach unattended; ensure valuables and documents are safely secured in your room and take advantage of your hotel's safe facilities if it has them. Follow the guidance of hotel staff regarding where you can and cannot venture on foot at night and be especially cautious walking any lonely roads or beaches after dark.
